Faculties - PD/Health/PE

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) at our school aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to make informed decisions in supporting not only their own health and wellbeing, but also that of their peers, families and wider community. The teachers in the PDHPE faculty are dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyle choices amongst all students and to also provide an environment where students feel safe and supported.

Years 7-10
PDHPE is a mandatory key learning area for all students in Years 7-10. The curriculum is dynamic and the staff members of our PDHPE faculty ensure that it is relevant and engaging to students. Students participate in a range of sports, modified games and movement activities designed to encourage participation, teamwork, skill development, tactics and decision making and to explore the elements of composition. Studentswill learn and refine skills in research and investigation, communication, decision-making, problem solving, critical thinking, group activities and interaction.

Year 7
Students have one theory class per week and two practical classes per week. In Year 7 students explore the idea of positive relationships and issues surrounding bullying, the changes associated with puberty, a balanced lifestyle and personal safety.

Year 8
Students have one theory class and one practical class per week. In Year 8 students investigate communication and belonging, relationships in focus, alcohol and the impact of other legal drugs and nutrition and physical activity.

Year 9
Students have one theory class and one practical class per week. In Year 9 students explore decisions around drugs, sexual health, positive wellbeing and mental health.

Year 10
Students have one theory class and one practical class per week. In Year 10 students investigate celebrating safely, minimising risk and promoting positive school community action.

Electives 8-10
In Years 8, 9 and 10 students are given the option to select a number of exciting and engaging electives.

Sports Action
This is a practical based elective where students explore a number of different sports and activities focusing on rules, participation and tactics.

Outdoor Recreation (Year 8)
This is the introduction to Outdoor Recreation where students are given the opportunity to learn basic skills in navigation, planning and risk management procedures. Students participate in one major expedition/excursion each term to practice and refine their skills.

Outdoor Recreation (Year 9/10)
This subject explores a range of different Outdoor Recreation activities and pursuits. Students will have the opportunity to learn about different types of activities and then put into practice what they have learnt during a number of major excursions and expeditions.

Physical Acitivity & Sports Studies (PASS)
PASS provides a foundation for students wishing to study senior PDHPE in Years 11 and 12. Students participate in one theory class and two practical classes each week and investigate a range of topics including the human body, sports coaching, sports administration, nutrition and issues surrounding physical activity. They participate in a range of physical activities beyond the scope of the core PDHPE course.

Years 11 and 12

Sport Lifestyle and Recreation (SLR)
SLR is a board endorsed subject; however, it doesn't count toward a student's ATAR. SLR is largely a practical based subject that allows students to continue their development of health and wellbeing. Students explore a range of topics including healthy lifestyles, sports coaching and physical activity choices.

Community & Family Studies (CAFS)
CAFS aims to develop in each student an ability to manage resources and take action to support the needs of individuals, groups, families and communities in Australian society. Students will undertake a range of individual projects that will enable them to collect and evaluate data from their local community.

PDHPE
The senior PDHPE course is a very interesting and challenging subject. It is comprised of a broad range of topics including how the body works during physical activity, fitness, biomechanics, training for performance, the health priorities of Australia, health promotion, first aid, sports medicine, outdoor recreation and social perspectives of sport in Australian society. Students develop a deep understanding of topics that directly affect not only their own personal health but also their local community and the nation of Australia. They will be able to evaluate current health practices and propose ideas that promote positive health and wellbeing.

Swim and Survive Program
Year 7 students learn knowledge and skills in the areas of water safety, rescue and survival technique. A selection of Year 10 leaaders, together with teachers, assist the Year 7 students.
